THE CHEMISTRY OF SHAMPOO

HOW ARE SHAMPOOS MADE?
Shampoos are formulated by combining a surfactant (surface active agent aka detergent), such as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, with a co-surfactant, such as cocamidopropyl betain, along with salt (sodium chloride – to adjust viscosity aka thickness), preservative(s) – to prolong shelf-life, fragrance, and other cosmetic and/or medicated ingredients, plus water. Most shampoos consist of anywhere between 75% – 95% water. Obviously, the higher the water content, the less of other beneficial ingredients, such as detergents, are being used.

HOW DO SURFACTANTS WORK?
Surfactants are composed of a “head and a tail,” if you will. The first, a hydrophobic tail (not water-friendly – allows dirt, oil, and grime to attach), while the second, the hydrophilic head (water-friendly, allows the H2O to wash away the hydrophobic tail and all its attached contents).

TIPS FOR BATHING YOUR PET

Save

  • Before the bath, build trust. Let your pet see and sniff the grooming tools, brushes, towels, and shampoo bottle and let them listen to the water flowing.
  • Praise and reward your pet with love and treats for relaxed behavior. Build a positive relationship with the bath for your pet.
  • If your pet is displaying signs of heightened distress and anxiety, we recommend using all-natural calming remedy, Richard’s Organics Pet Calm, to help relax them for the bath. Takes only 10-15 minutes to see results.
  • Wear clothing you don’t mind getting wet and dirty.
  • Close your bathroom door so your pet doesn’t escape and run through your house wet and bubbly!
  • Before washing, carefully brush your pet’s hair coat to remove all tangles and matted areas. If they have badly matted fur, carefully remove with scissors. Also, check for ticks, fleas, burrs, hot spots, or other irregularities.
  • Use a spray nozzle if you have one – it makes the rinse-out much easier.
  • Use any of SynergyLabs’ professionally formulated & pH balanced products, made specifically for pets. And, don’t skip the conditioner! It’s an important part of re-building and maintaining moisture and sheen in your pet’s hair coat.

PEST PROBLEMS: FLEAS & TICKS

FLEAS

Dogs & other warm-blooded animals are especially prone to catching fleas in warm-weathered climates or during the summer months when air temperatures and humidity levels are high. Dogs can catch fleas from other furry friends, or from the environment. Fleas use their strong back legs to jump on the “host” (your dog) and then bite the animal. These bites can cause itching, hair-loss & hot-spots from itching, inflamed lesions and even skin infections.

You may also notice small dirt-like particles on your pet – which is flea feces and digested blood. The female fleas can live up to a few weeks on your pet, and may lay between 20-30 eggs a day during that time. Some eggs will hatch into larvae on your pet, while the others fall off, into your home environment –  where they feed off skin scales and other organic matter. Pet parents must treat both the dog as well as the inside & outside home environments.

TICKS

Ticks are parasitic anthropods that attach themselves and feed off warm hosts, such as your dog. Ticks are usually found in the wooded areas, in long grass, and plants. Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors are prone to encountering a tick at any given time. When your dog does, the tick can attach and lock its mouth into a crevice or fold and begin to feed on blood – sometimes even feeding for days.

Besides being gross, ticks cause major concern for animals and people alike because of a high-risk for transmitting diseases such as Lyme, ehrlichiosis, rocky mountain spotted fever, or babesiosis. A tick bite can also cause anemia, joint-swelling, fever, and paralysis. If your pet displays any signs of illness, and you suspect he/she was bitten by a tick, consult your veterinarian immediately. Always check your pet for ticks if they’ve been running around outside, especially in wooded areas.

FACTS ABOUT DENTAL DISEASE

Save

Save

Save

Dental disease in canines is very common, especially in small dog breeds. And, periodontal disease is shown to have a correlation with heart disease due to bacterial toxins, destroyed tissue and live bacteria traveling from the mouth into the blood stream, which can build-up and attach to the arteries surrounding the heart. Research has demonstrated further injury to major organs such as the: kidney, liver and heart.

Additionally, when the supporting bone below the gums becomes infected – it is also destroyed. The progression of this bone loss can also cause pain, leaving pets reluctant to eat. It’s important to know, if pet’s teeth are not regularly cared for, tartar and mineral deposit build-ups can lead to gingivitis, halitosis, periodontal disease and even tooth loss.

The good news is, with proper care and early detection, periodontal disease can be prevented, treated, and even reversed. Because pets can’t take care of their own mouths, it’s vital their pet parents do. That’s you!

SIGNS YOUR PET HAS DENTAL PROBLEMS

  • Bad Breath – Caused by Bacteria Build-Up, Which Can Lead To Dental Disease.
  • Yellow or Brown Teeth.
  • Swollen, Inflamed, Red, and/or Puffy Gums.
  • Weight Loss. Poor Appetite.

CANINE EAR INFECTIONS

Save

Canine ear infections are all too common, caused by bacteria & yeast built-up due to: moisture, wax, allergies, ear mites, excessive hair growth in the ear, or hypothyroidism. Bacteria and yeast can grow quite easily in your canine’s ears if moisture becomes trapped in the canal, a typical result of bathing, grooming or swimming. Many dogs also suffer from allergies, both environmental or food related and are pre-disposed to ear infections.

MAKE SURE TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR

  • Ear & Head Scratching
  • Discolored Discharge from The Ear
  • Foul Odor
  • Redness and Swelling
  • Scabs and Crust Forming Around the Ear
  • Hair Loss Around the Ear
  • Head Shaking or Tilting

HOT SPOTS & IRRITATED SKIN

Save

Save

Save

Save

Save

Pet parents must pay close attention to environmental, dietary and situational ailments irritating your pet’s skin such as: allergies, fleas, tick bites, matted/thick/dirty coats, sun burn, wet dogs, or anal sac disease. These ailments can cause you pet to chew, lick, bite, and scratch those areas – at times – to no avail, which can become very painful and dangerous for your pet. Sometimes chewing can even be prompted by boredom.

Hot spots and inflammation can occur quite rapidly after a pet starts itching, biting and licking these affected areas – which will prompt the development of painful, red, and moist irritated lesions. These lesions are called hot spots, also known as acute moist dermatitis, and must be treated immediately. It’s important to determine the cause of the underlying issue, thus you should consult your veterinarian if it’s a persistent problem.

TIPS FOR PREVENTING HOT SPOTS

  • Groom Your Dog Regularly and Keep Hair Clipped Short
  • Use Flea & Tick Products Recommended by Your Vet
  • Keep Your Pet Active and Healthy. Feed a Good Diet, And Provide Lots of Exercise and Play Time to Prevent Boredom
  • Dry Your Pet Completely After a Bath
  • Clean and Dry Pet After a Swim in the Lake or Ocean

SEASONAL VS. EXCESSIVE SHEDDING

Save

Save

Save

Save

Save

Save

It’s a natural process for dogs to lose old or damaged hair, which we call shedding. A healthy pet will naturally shed its coat (also called “blowing its coat” – which usually happens seasonally), but when the shedding turns excessive – there may be an underlying issue causing this to happen. Certain breeds also shed more than others, and you may notice that around spring-time and sometimes during the fall, your thick haired dog may blow its coat. Most of the time the undercoat is what sheds the most, and some of its normal coat, too.

To cosmetically help reduce excessive shedding, pet parents should groom their pets often with quality grooming tools. However, daily brushing is only a cosmetic quick-fix, the underlying problem needs to be uncovered and treated. If your pet is displaying signs of skin irritations, dry & brittle hair, open sores, bald spots or thinning of the coat, or excessive hair pulling out, then it’s time to see the vet. These issues could be the result of poor nutrition from diet, stress and anxiety, or an undiscovered medical issue which requires attention.

EXCESSIVE SHEDDING MAY ALSO RESULT FROM THE FOLLOWING ISSUES

  • Hormonal Imbalances
  • Excessive Licking Causing Hot Spots and/or Inflamed Lesions
  • Medications
  • Pregnancy
  • Flea, Tick or Parasite Bites (Mange Mites, Dermatitis, Ring Worm, Etc.)
  • Immune Issues or Kidney, Liver, Adrenal, Or Thyroid Disease
  • Food or Environmental Allergies. Sunburn
  • Fungal and/or Bacterial Infection
  • Other Irritants: Shampoo, Soap, Household Chemicals or Even a New Dog Bed
